What Is a Cochlear Implant? A Life-Changing Hearing Solution Explained
- March 15, 2025
You might have heard about it in a heartwarming news story or during a visit with your audiologist. The name has become somewhat familiar, even to those without hearing loss – but do you actually know what a cochlear implant is?
Most people have never encountered one firsthand, so if you’re unsure, you’re not alone. Fortunately, you’re in the right place. At NYC Hearing Associates, cochlear implants have always been a special area of focus. We created our Cochlear Implant Center specifically to offer comprehensive, specialized services to our community – from diagnosis through rehabilitation. The experts are here to shed some light.
How Does a Cochlear Implant Work?
Unlike a hearing aid, which relies on the ear to deliver sound waves, a cochlear implant completely bypasses the non- or low-functioning ear. The external processor captures sound and converts it into electrical signals that the brain can interpret. These signals are sent to the internal implant, which connects directly to the cochlear nerve. The brain is then able to “hear” the sound – without needing the ear to process it.
Is a Cochlear Implant Right for You?
Training your brain to become accustomed to the new system takes time, but the benefits of cochlear implants are well-documented. And while they were once recommended only for people with profound hearing loss, that’s no longer the case.
Today, cochlear implants may also help people with moderate to severe hearing loss who aren’t getting enough benefit from hearing aids and other devices. If you find that conversations still sound muffled or unclear – even with your hearing aids – it may be time to consider the next step.
This procedure is also often recommended for children with moderate to profound hearing loss that isn’t helped by hearing aids or other treatments/devices. It gives your child a leg up on normal language development and a better chance of moving through the general education system with their peers. That said, every case is different, and your care team will evaluate your child’s unique needs before moving forward.
Your audiologist will help determine whether you’re a good candidate for a cochlear implant. If you decide to move forward, you won’t be doing it alone – you’ll be teamed up with your very own hearing care dream team, including an audiologist, a speech-language pathologist, and a specialized ENT surgeon. Together, they’ll guide you every step of the way.
